In order to achieve highly portable lightness while maintaining strength as a metal bumper, we selected the aluminum alloy A2078. Also known as super duralumin, this material is an alloy thatmbines aluminum with copper (Cu) and magnesium (Mg). While featuring the lightness of plastic, duralumin is a high-strength metal. However, in very thin, finely detailed forms, it is extremely difficult to process, and the machining cannot be accomplished without the expertise and experience of master artisans.

The Edge is created with the use of a five-axis machine tool that carves it out of a large metal block. Weighing a mere 15g, the bumper component that remains at the end of this lavish process represents only about 5% of the original block of material. In addition to possessing abundant strength needed to protect your iPhone, the very thinness of it is a triumph of Japanese technological prowess.

With its lightweight design that feels familiar in your hand, one characteristic feature of The Edge is a texture that you wouldn’t expect from metal. It softly grips the skin in a way that feels comfortable to the touch, and the surface resists fingerprints. The secret is a special electrolytic coating that can only be accomplished in factories in Japan. This molecular-level fine surface processing results in a coating with non-skid properties, which evaporates perspiration on contact so that fingerprints donft remain behind.
